Member stores of the American Booksellers Association can place their orders for this year’s ABC Best Books for Young Readers catalog through September 8 through an order form on BookWeb.org. The 20-page color consumer flyer should be in stores in early October.
This will be the first printed catalog of the best books for young readers since 2019. Last year, the uncertainty of COVID led to a switch to the digital-only catalog, with the ability for bookstores to print copies as needed .
The catalog will include nearly 200 titles from the first and last lists for children and adolescents, all suggested by ABA member booksellers and selected by a committee of children’s booksellers. Committee members included Brein Lopez, CEO of Children’s Book World, Los Angeles, California; Diane Capriola, owner of Little Shop of Stories in Decatur, Georgia; Kathy Burnette, owner of Brain Lair Books in South Bend, Indiana; Meghan Goel, children’s buyer at BookPeople in Austin, Texas; Molly Olivo, head of children’s books at Child’s Play in Washington, DC; Rebecca Crosswhite, director of Rediscover Books in Boise, Idaho; and Stephanie Heinz, bookseller at Print: A Bookstore in Portland, Maine.
Appearance and brand image
The cover of this year’s catalog features works of art by Amari and the Nightbrothers, written by BB Alston (Balzer + Bray). This is the first time in the history of the catalog that the cover features a mid-level title.
The catalog does not carry a fourth quarter/holiday mark, so booksellers can use it throughout the year. And again this year, the inside back cover will feature a comprehensive list of titles contained in the catalog, with checkboxes for easy ordering or creating wish lists.
Booksellers are encouraged to order printed catalogs. A print is a half-page spread on the back cover of the catalog customized for the bookstore; it consists of the store’s logo, name, location and opening hours. Along with the print, the store name also appears on the front cover.
Price and Order
Members of the ABC Children group at ABA will automatically receive 250 free no-print catalogs (stores can join the ABC group here). ABA stores that have opted in to receive the Children’s Box mailing will automatically receive 20 free unprinted catalogs. The online order form is used to purchase additional catalogs, printed or not.
Additional catalogs are available in units of 500 unprinted copies, and the cost for each additional 500 units is $30 for ABC Group members and $40 for non-members, including shipping. The one-time plate cost for printing, if desired, is $85 for ABC Group members and $130 for non-members; the minimum catalog order for printing is 1,500 copies.
Orders of up to 10,000 copies can be placed via the online form. For larger orders, stores should contact ABC Group Director Gen de Botton.
