Canadian music rights management company Kilometer Music Group has acquired two catalogs of songs, from Murda Beatz and Bryson Tiller.
Deals include producer/songwriter Murda Beatz’s hits recorded by Drake, Travis Scott, 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane and Migos, as well as artist Bryson Tiller’s full multi-platinum selling catalog with his 2015 debut, Soul trap.
According to Kilometer, the deals “significantly increase” its Barometer Global Music Royalty Fund’s holdings “in the best songs of the modern era of pop, rap and R&B.”
Kilometer was started by music industry veterans Michael McCarty, Gavin Brown and Rodney Murphy and is specifically looking to buy Canadian-made music rights.
In February 2021, Kilometer partnered with Toronto-based independent investment firm Barometer Capital Management Inc., which currently manages over $1 billion in assets.
The two companies formed the Barometer Global Music Royalty Fund, a limited partnership with a “target size of US$200 million”.
The nine-month fund has now bought the 285-song Murda Beatz catalog of Drake hits, including Portland, raise, No long talk, With youand number 1 on the Billboard Pleasant for what who spent eight weeks in the top spot in 2018.
Kilometer says that with this acquisition, it now has a total of 36 Drake songs in the fund.
Additionally, the acquisition also includes Travis Scott’s hit Butterfly EffectNipsey Hustle’s biggest fire release ‘Grindin’ all my life and a “42-song entry” in the Migos catalog, including their hit Sports car.
According to Kilometer, Bryson Tiller’s 78-song catalog includes all three releases from his album and features performances on all the songs he co-wrote with other artists.
The catalog includes his 2015 platinum debut album soul trapwhich earned him a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song for Swap and his song 7X platinum and Billboard Top 10 R&B Don’t.
Tiller’s 2017 album true to self debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart and 2020 album Anniversary debuted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart.
Tiller co-wrote and appeared on songs with Rhianna, Drake, HER, Summer Walker, Chris Brown, and the release of DJ Khalid wild thoughts, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has over 850 million streams on Spotify alone.
With these new acquisitions, Kilometer says its catalog portfolio now includes more than 900 songs, with The Fund co-owning 10 of the 100 most-streamed songs of all time, and 7% of Spotify’s “Billions Club” – songs with 1 billion streams or Suite.
