The best lighting finds from four furniture catalogs
LOS ANGELES Decorator and interior designer Amanda Gunawan isn’t very fond of standout pieces. “Spaces should be a symphony – no component should be louder than the others,” she said. Her egalitarian ethos is reflected in her favorite lighting choices from the spring catalogs of four accessible home decor brands. None of its choices – table and floor lamps, pendant and ceiling lamp – scream for attention or shock your pocket. “I really like white lighting, and there’s a lack of affordable white lighting,” she said, delighted with her findings. “It was like reading four books and choosing my favorite quote from each one.” Here, his selections.
The agate-like finish of Apt2B’s two-tone ceramic table lamp caught Ms. Gunawan’s discerning eye. Appreciating the “brutality” of its jagged-edged burnt sienna and cream glaze, Ms. Gunawan said that while the surface is not aggressively three-dimensional, “there is a roughness and gradient that gives the lamp a material quality. A fan of eye-pleasing neutral palettes as they add harmony to any space, the designer also loves the understated tone of the earth lamp’s beige fabric shade. “It would fit in well in a space with lots of wood,” Ms. Gunawan said. The designer said she could see the 17-inch by 10-inch lamp on a side table. (Consider pairing it with something similar but not identical.) Plus, she added, the reasonable price of $138 can’t be beat. Brookite table lamp, $138, Apt2B.com
